My Review: I had to take a few days after finishing this book to even gather my thoughts. I have read books that I have cried in, but this book, by far, wins the most cried over award.
I have seen this book around but never knew if I should get it because it just didn't sound like something I would want to read. I decided to get it since a lot of my close book buddies told me to get it and also it is now working on becoming a movie. I finally said, okay, if its gonna be a movie it can't be so bad.
I am so glad I got it. I seem to be on a kick of reading emotional books even when not reading it. I figured eh, I might cry in the last chapter or so, man was I wrong.
This is the story of Hazel who goes to support group for her cancer she is battling. She knows all of them in there, and even the ones that slowly end up on the list of those that lost their battles. On a night she didn't even want to go to, she meets Augustus Waters. He is friends with Isaac that is in her support group. Isaac finds out that he lost his one eye due to cancer and now is ending up having to be blind due to losing the other one. Augustus accompanies him to support group for support of his operation. Augustus also has had cancer in the past but getting one of his legs removed is considered NEC- or No Evidence of Cancer. He ends up asking Hazel to hang out later after the meeting is over and so the story goes from there.
Hazel learns what is means to love others and goes through an emotional journey through her life as well as the lives of those around her. You can't help but feel pitty, anger, loss, love, happiness...all for Hazel. The poor girl is going through so much, and just when she thinks her death is all that is really left to be considered worse in her life, indeed more does get worse. You gain such a love for her as well as for Augustus, Isaac, and her family.
After I posted that I got this book, so many of you all told me to have tissues ready. I really didn't believe it. I figured it couldn't be too bad. I really wish I would have listened. I was about halfway through the book when I started crying and I didn't stop till way after I finished it. I even started cursing John Green for making such a sad but wonderful book. It ripped me apart, but at the same time made me a different person so I can't even be mad at him for writing it. The truth is, even with all the emotional pain this book delivers, I would read this book over and over again.
Most books I can say something bad about, like I wish he didn't do this, or why did they write that....but for this book, I can't think of anything wrong. Yes, it kills you, yes it makes you have horrible dreams, but it also brings you a warm inside you and gives you a new outlook on life. Parts of the book at first I wondered what he was getting at, it was kind of like he was giving clues along the way but it is up to us to figure them out before the event ends up happening. Everything written in this book had a meaning and a lot of thought put behind it.
This is officially the best book I have read this year, and it will most likely live in my top 3 books I have read ever.
I can't recommend this enough to all of you and I have to say, as I have been told, keep tissues handy because you will need them, no matter if you are a girl or a boy, you will be crying.
